Getting brain freeze from all the terms tossed around for frozen dessert? Here's the scoop:
- The difference between ice cream and frozen yogurt is minimal—they've got similar sweeteners, calories and nutrients, like calcium and protein.
- Fruit-flavored sherbets also contain milk or cream, but if you're watching fat intake, sherbet's the way to go—most have two percent butterfat or less, compared to ice cream's 10 percent-plus.
- Sorbets, generally fruit-based, are technically ices (as in Italian ice).
- To avoid confusing sherbet with sorbet, check out the texture. Sorbet is granular; sherbet is creamy.
- Sorbet has less fat than ice cream—and none of its milk, cream or eggs—but generally the same amount of sugar.
