John says it's pure coincidence that he chose to play two fatherly roles in the same year. "Those were the roles that came up," the actor shrugs. "I guess that's what happens when you get to be 40. I'd played a parent before, but this was the first time it was about parenting." So has either role at all changed his attitude toward parenting? "No, it hasn't changed it for better or for worse," says the actor, who's been romantically linked to Minnie Driver and Neve Campbell. "I have a healthy respect for it. Parents are just always selfless; it's like the heroic of the everyday. There's a line in [Martian Child] that they should give medals to parents, and I thought that was a nice line. I have a lot of respect for parents." When asked if he has any plans to become one, the actor laughs, "Not that I know of at the moment! I love kids. I just don't have any yet."
