Wax Attacks
Beauty Gone Bad: How to Avoid Salon Infections

Wax Attacks

Waxing, particularly getting a Brazilian wax, has introduced a whole new wave of beauty-related infections such as:

  • folliculitis (infections of the hair follicle)
  • common infection culprits, Staph and Strept
  • STDs such as Herpes and HPV
  • contagious infections such as molluscum contagiosum and fungus
  • A number of factors go into the spread of these diseases such as:

  • Double-dipping the wax stick — Double-dipping can cause the wood stick to take bacteria or viruses from the area and introduce them into the wax pot. If the salon employee uses a fresh pot of wax each time, then this risk is less.
  • Vulnerable skin from waxing — When hair is ripped out of the follicle, the skin may get irritated and vulnerable to infection and bleeding.
  • People with STD outbreaks that are silent — Most people know not to get a wax when they have an STD outbreak, but there are some active outbreaks that are silent and a person wouldn't know if she or he was infected.
