Former U.S. Supreme Court justice
O'Connor had a mastectomy to battle her 1988 breast cancer diagnosis and, ever strong willed and determined, returned to the bench after missing just two weeks of work. In response to speculation about her health, she said, "I am not sick. I am not bored. I am not resigning." President Ronald Reagan's 1981 appointment made her the first woman to serve on the country's highest court. A centrist, O'Connor often provided the swing vote on contentious issues like abortion. She was replaced by Samuel A. Alito Jr. when she resigned from the court in 2006 at age 75.
