Dealing with 9 Common Migraine Triggers

Changes in Enviroment, Weather and Altitude

Any abrupt seasonal changes in weather including temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, air quality or sudden rain can bring on a migraine. Day-to-day abrupt weather change can also instigate an attack. In California, the Santa Ana winds can suddenly blow through and affect susceptible migraine patients.

A migraine patient who travels to higher altitudes can experience a migraine attack. Mountaineers, hikers and skiers in particular who suffer from migraines can experience more frequent migraines in the higher altitudes. So can athletes or runners who compete in races or events that take place at higher altitudes. In fact, airplane travel may be enough to trigger a migraine in certain individuals.

Talk to your doctor about ways to minimize the impact of weather on your migraine sensitivity. Some people actually choose to live in geographic locations where temperature shifting is minimal.
