Dealing with 9 Common Migraine Triggers

Drugs and Caffeine

Drinking or eating foods that contain caffeine can trigger a migraine; so can rapid or sudden withdrawal of caffeine. Remember that caffeine can be found in coffee, regular and diet sodas, teas, chocolate and chocolate products, and supplements, especially weight loss supplements. Any medication that dilates blood vessels can also trigger a migraine. Other medications that may act as a trigger include:

Tagamet (Cimetidine), Estrogen in hormone replacement therapy, birth control pills (estrogen component), Pondimin (Fenfluramine), Indocin (Indomethacin), Nitrostat (Nitroglycerine), Adalat/Procardia (Nifedipine), Ser-ap-Es/Hydropres, Regroton (Reserpine-containing medications), Theodor/Theo-24 (Theophylline). Overuse of pain medication or the sudden withdrawal of pain medication can also trigger a migraine.

You can talk to your doctor if you are taking one of these medications if you believe it's a possible migraine trigger. He can suggest other medications with a similar therapeutic action that are less likely to instigate a migraine attack.
