If you have psoriasis you need to work with your doctor to find the right treatment for you. In addition, nonprofit medical practice Mayo Clinic suggests trying these complementary home remedies to help improve the appearance and feel of skin damaged by psoriasis:
- Take daily baths. For 15 minutes, soak in lukewarm water with bath oil, Epsom salts or oiled oatmeal. Use only mild soaps that have added oils and fats.
- Use moisturizer. Apply heavy, ointment-based moisturizers while your skin is still moist. During cold, dry weather, you may need to apply a moisturizer several times a day.
- Cover up overnight. To prevent redness and scaling, apply an ointment-based moisturizer to your skin and wrap with plastic wrap overnight.
- Get some sun. A controlled amount of sunlight can improve lesions, but too much sun can trigger or worsen outbreaks and increase the risk of skin cancer. Consult your doctor about light therapy.
- Apply cortisone. Use over-the-counter cortisone cream (0.5 or one percent) when your symptoms are especially bad.
- Avoid triggers. Avoid common psoriasis triggers, like stress, smoking and alcohol.
