A test for human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted disease that is a major cause of cervical cancer, has the potential to better identify women at increased risk of cervical cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the HPV DNA test in 2003 to screen for high-risk strains of HPV that can lead to cancer.
