Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death in children up to age 14. Children under age 5 and people between 15 and 24 are the most likely to drown. Sixty-three percent of all drownings occur in the summer.
Alcohol is a major factor in many drownings, contributing to nearly half of all drownings in adolescent boys. Excessive drinking plays a role in 25 to 50 percent of adolescent and adult water recreation deaths.
Stay alert and don't drink when in and around water. Alcohol impairs your senses, increasing your risk of drowning and making it harder to react to an emergency. Supervise swimming children closely. Most drowning children do not call for help or wave their arms.
