Understanding the labels

Some wines may make claims — truthful ones — that they are "sustainable," "natural" or "eco-friendly." But does that mean they're organic? Not necessarily. Only wines actually labeled "organic" have been certified by the National Organic Program (NOP), the part of the USDA responsible for setting guidelines for the processing and labeling of organic products.

But understanding wine labels can still be confusing for consumers, in part because of a distinction the NOP makes between "organic wine" and "wine made from organic grapes." (Yes, there is a difference.)
