Paint is one of the largest contributors to poor air quality. All petroleum based paints (including latex) are a source of volatile organic compounds, some of which are carcinogens and cause liver or kidney damage. Look for products made from tree and plant oils and resins, herbal extracts, mineral and vegetable pigments, citrus-peel thinners and beeswax. Milk and casein paint, plaster and natural grass and fabric wall coverings produced with nontoxic dyes and adhesives are healthy choices.
