The first lady is currently touring Africa to promote the prevention and treatment of HIV and malaria, as well as the importance of education and women's empowerment. On July 12, 2005, in Cape Town, South Africa, Laura Bush's lifelong commitment to the education of children was recognized during her visit to Centre for the Book, an institution established to create a culture of literacy in South Africa.
