The Situation: Four-year-old Ashley starts crying every morning when Mommy leaves for work. "Why do you have to go?" she whines. "Don't you want to stay home with me?"
What Preschoolers Think: Ashley knows how to push mom's buttons to get what she wants. She's aware that other activities, like work, compete for Mom's time. She needs to understand that her mother works to help the family.
The Lessons You Can Teach:
Don't speak negatively about work or your job during the time you spend with your pre-schooler.
Do offer reassurance to let her know that work is important, but she comes first. "My job helps our family buy the things we need and want. But, I thought about you all day at work, and couldn't wait to see you!"
Talk about what a good job you do at work.
Ask your child about the job or career she'd like to have when she grows up.
